Craps

Will you become instantly rich with one roll of the dice? Many lucky players have scored huge million dollar wins while gambling craps. Gamblers love the game of craps because of its simplicity; the shooter rolls the dice along the table while the players bet on the outcome of the roll. Ready to get in on the action? Plenty of gambling sites in Canada offer high quality online craps. If you’re new to the game, I made sure to include the basic crap rules and strategy so you can play like a pro in no time.

How to Play Online Craps

A craps table in a real casino has the shape of a bathtub and spans about 4.3 meters. Online gambling sites feature a virtual version of the craps table that look just like the ones found in gaming rooms. One side of the table has the bank with stacked chips. Meanwhile, the other side features a long, angled mirror. The inside of the table includes the betting area in a U-shaped section with proposition bets in the middle of the layout.

Step 1: The Come Out

The game begins when the person throwing the dice, known as the shooter, rolls a set of two dice. Before the roll, players bet on the numbers that result from the thrown dice. They have two betting options: “Pass Line” and “Don’t Pass Line”.

Pass Line: You can play this bet by placing chips on the section of the table marked “Pass Line”. Pass line bets have a house edge of 1.41%. If you bet on a pass line, you win or lose according to the following outcomes:

  • Craps or crapping out: The roll totals 2, 3, or 12 and means you automatically lose your bet
  • Natural: The roll equals 7 or 11 and pays out 1:1
  • Point: Players receive a point for a roll equal to 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. This means a point has been established. The dealer places a chip that says “On” next to the point number. Then the shooter rolls again until rolling the point number (the number of the first roll). If the point number is rolled, you receive a payout of 1 to 1. If a 7 is rolled first, you lose the bet.

Don’t Pass LineThe don’t pass line means the opposite of the pass bet. You can play this bet by placing your chips on the section marked “Don’t Pass Line”.

  • Craps or crapping out: A roll equal to 2 or 3 pays out 1 to 1.
  • Natural: A total of 7 or 11 means you lose the bet.
  • Push: A roll equal to 12 means you neither win nor lose.
  • Point: A roll totaling 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 establishes a point. A chip marked “On” is placed on the point number. The shooter rolls again until rolling the point number. If a 7 is rolled first, you win 1 to 1. If the point is rolled, you lose your bet.

Step 2: Point

After a point has been established, each player can increase their initial bet by taking odds. Players have the option to “Pass Odds” or “Don’t Pass Odds”. This works relatively the same way as the pass line and don’t pass line bets.

Pass Odds: After a point has been established, many online casinos give the option for players to take odds by placing an additional bet. You win this bet if the point is rolled again before a 7 is rolled. The payout is 2:1 when 4 or 10 is the point, 3:2 if 5 or 9 is the point, and 6:5 if 6 or 8 is the point.

Don’t Pass Odds: Players can also place a “Don’t Pass Odds” after the point has been established. This bet wins if the shooter rolls a 7 before rolling the point. The payout is 1:2 if 4 or 10 is the point, 2:3 if 5 or 9 is the point, or 5:6 if 6 or 8 is the point.

More Betting Choices

A lot of options: In addition to these bets, craps has other kinds of betting options that players can make during any phase of the game, whether or not a point has been established. In fact, craps has a lot of options so although I didn’t include every bet, below we explained the major betting options when you play craps online.

Field Bet: When a player places a field bet, they win even money (1:1) if the shooter rolls a 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11. On most tables, rolling a 2 pays double and 12 pays triple. If the shooter rolls a 5, 6, 7, or 8, the player loses. The house edge is a 2.77%.

Come Bet: Almost the same as a pass line bet, the come bet can be wagered at any point during the game even after the point has been established.

Don’t Come Bet: Similar to the don’t pass line bet, the come bet can be made at any point during the game even after the point has been established.

Place Bets: With place bets, the player wagers on a number that will roll before a 7 rolls. This bet can be made at any time, but is typically made after a point has already been established. Place bets pay out according to the following:

  • 4 or 10: Pays 9:5 with a 6.7% house edge
  • 5 or 9: Pays 7:5 with a 4% house edge
  • 6 or 8: Pays 7:6 with a 1.5% house edge

Proposition or Single Roll Bets

In a game of craps, players can bet single roll or proposition bets on any roll. The house edge on proposition bets ranges between 11.1% and 16.67%. Proposition bets include:

  • Any Craps (2, 3, or 12): Wins if the shooter rolls 2, 3 or 12, Pays 8:1
  • Any 7: Wins if the shooter rolls 7, Pays 5:1
  • Yo (11): Wins if the shooter rolls 11, Pays 16:1
  • 3 (ace-deuce): Wins if the shooter rolls a 3, Pays 16:1
  • 2 (snake eyes, or aces): Wins if shooter rolls a 2, Pays 31:1
  • 12 (boxcars, midnight, or cornrows): Wins if shooter rolls a 12
  • 2 or 12 (hi-lo): Wins if shooter rolls a 2 or 12. The stickman places this bet on the line dividing the 2 and 12 bets
